Humboldt County is categorized as the second highest ranked county of older adults (aged 65+) when it comes to fall related deaths and injuries.   

How big is the problem in Iowa?

· Falls are leading cause of injury hospitalizations and emergency visits in Iowa 

· One out of 27 Iowa residents aged 65 and older are hospitalized for a fall-related injury 

· 84% of ED visits, for residents over 65+, are fall related 

· Humboldt County is one of the 26th oldest counties.

           The Humboldt County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary 2016 Scholarship Program will be awarding $1000 scholarships to area students enrolled in accredited health care education programs. To qualify, the student must be within two years of completing a health care education program (within one year of a two-year health care education program) and a Humboldt County High School graduate OR employed in a Humboldt County medical facility such as HCMH, medical clinic, dental office or care center.

            Award recipients will be selected based upon academic achievement, leadership potential and desire to pursue a health care career. Scholarship applications may be obtained at the HCMH Reception Desk or by clicking on the link below.

Sealed proposals will be received by the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital (the “Hospital”) and/or Construction Manager – Graham Construction at Humboldt County Memorial Hospital (the “Hospital”) 1000 15^th Street N, Humboldt, IA, Attention: Hospital CEO on or before 16^th day of January, 2018 at 2:00 PM and opened at 2:05 PM the same day in the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital Conference Room for furnishing all labor, materials, and equipment for Bid Packages (01) thru (10).  The proposals will be presented to and considered by the Board of Trustees of the Hospital during a special meeting at 4:30 PM CST on January 22, 2018 at Humboldt County Memorial Hospital in the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital Conference Room.  Such proposals received will be acted upon at such time and place or at such later time and place as may then be fixed.

PROJECT/WORK DESCRIPTION:  Furnish all labor, material and equipment required to accomplish the construction described in the specifications, indicated on the plans, and per the schedule. The Work includes construction of a new 2-story, 37,740 square-foot medical clinic building and 4,864 interior entrance renovation on the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital campus.  Demolition of existing structures and site work, incidental excavation and backfill for structural footings and mechanical and electrical connections are included in the Work.

2016-2017 VIS Statement

In partnership with Webster County Public Health, the Outpatient Clinic at HCMH provides quality, confidential family planning services provided to you by a doctor and a registered nurse. Kelli Wallace, MD, Title Ten Family Planning Services

The Hospice Path of Life Garden is located on the grounds of Humboldt County Memorial Hospital (HCMH). The Path of Life Garden offers a unique opportunity to memorialize a beloved family member or a friend in a permanent way. 

The Path of Life brick pavers are available for purchase. A 4 x 8 single paver brick is available with a $100 donation includes up to 3 lines of engraving. An 8 x 8 double paver brick is $200 with up to 6 lines of engraving.   

Hospice of Humboldt County will be installing new engraved paver bricks in May with viewing after Memorial Day.

Because of a high level of concern for the health of our patients and staff, Humboldt County Memorial Hospital is

limiting visitor access to Long Term Care and Inpatient unit during the flu season. 

All outpatient services are still available. Labs, Radiology, Rehab Services and all other outpatient test and appointments are still running as normal. 

Visitor Guidelines

* No visitors to Long Term Care are allowed at this time.

* Inpatient visitors are restricted to immediate family only and no children under the age of 18 are allowed unless they are a patient or parent of a patient (exceptions need to be cleared with the charge nurse).

* Any visitors with fever, cough, or diarrhea should stay home.

* Anyone coming into the hospitals with flu or cold symptoms will be required to wear a mask.

* Visitors and patients should cover their cough (cough or sneeze into your sleeve).

* Visitors may be required to wear personal protective equipment such as gown, gloves, and a mask if visiting a patient.

Hand Hygiene

• Visitors and patients should wash their hands frequently with soap and water or use hand sanitizer.

• Hand sanitizer is the preferred method. 

• Hand hygiene should be done before and after patient contact.

Deuce's Wild, Dueling Piano's Return

The talented performers from Minneapolis last entertained us in 2012. After many favorable comments from all attendees, we decided an encore performance was necessary. 

The Founder's Event is our biggest fundraising event. This year proceeds will benefit & support patient services at your hospital.

ENCORE PERFORMANCE

Two guys, two pianos, and unlimited laughs

Deuces Wild! Dueling Pianos defies all the expectations and experiences in a dueling piano show.  Dave & Ted take you on a variety class act adventure, where the audience paves the way to a wild and zany performance. Back by popular demand, the show dares to go where you take it with comedy, music, and a whole lot of improv. Whether twenty-five or eighty-five, you will be guaranteed to be on your feet and part of the action.

HCMH Foundation will be holding it's Annual Founder's Event on Saturday, January 21, 2012 at the Humboldt County Events Center.

We heard many postive comments on how much fun last year's Founder's Event was.

This year Foundation is supporting our Ambulance service. The Ambulance Department has requested funding to purchase two - Lifepack 12 Defibrillator/Monitors for a total cost of $28,000. The Lifepack 12 is a multi-parameter monitoring system that detects heart rhythm which can then be directly sent to Iowa Heart Center. The cardiologist will read the information and begin assisting with the care plan at the scene. We know with a cardiac event, time is of the essence and the sooner we begin treatment, the more lives we can save.

The HCMH Emergency Management Team (EMT) has a dedicated staff of 30 volunteers on call 24/7responding to over 650 calls per year with an average response time of 8 minutes. HCMH EMT’s also utilize an Urgent Response Program. In the event of a cardiac attack, trauma or unresponsive individual, our EMT’s arrive at the scene in less than 4 minutes from the initial 911 call.

 We never know when a loved one will need emergency care. The Foundation is requesting a minimum of $150 to join the Founder’s Club. With your Founder’s Club membership, you will receive an invitation for 2 to the 9^th Annual Founder’s Event. This is our way of thanking you for your support, along with an opportunity to enjoy the fellowship of others who recognize the need to support our Hospital and its ambulance service.

American Heart Association research shows that one in three Americans have one or more type of cardiovascular disease.

 Humboldt County Memorial Hospital (HCMH) offers Arterial Life Saving Screens to help people identify their risk for cardiovascular disease early, before an event such as a heart attack or stroke occur.

Those interested in more information or in making an appointment are encouraged to call the Radiology Department - 515-332-4200

The screening package includes four screens, costs $99 and takes less than an hour to complete.

 All screens are done by ultrasound or a blood draw and have absolutely no radiation exposure. Additionally, a board certified radiologist reviews all the results to determine if they are within normal or abnormal ranges. These results are then sent to the patient within 10 days. This is a great screening package that gives you and your physician a lot of information for only $99. It’s a proactive way to know the specific steps you should take to improve or take charge of your overall cardiovascular health.”  

 Anyone that has two or more of these conditions may benefit from the Arterial Life Saving Screening package:

HCMH Maintenance Department has complete the expansion and renovation of the nurse's station. A very welcoming design features a reception desk for the ward clerk. Behind the front counter are two work stations for the nurse's on duty along with work stations for the Physicians.

Patient Care coordinator Kelly Smith-Larson also has her own work area. The expansion also has a conference room attached. Julie Carlson, Director of Nursing would like to thank the Maintenance Department for all the hard work and time in completing a beautiful new area.

Michelle Gloss, Improvement Manager from Press Ganey Associates Congratulates Humboldt County Memorial Hospital on our efforts, which have resulted in statistically significant improvement for HCMH. "Your hard work and dedication to quality improvement are evident in the increase of your Emergency Department scores for Overall Satisfaction. The mean score has increased by 5.3, which is statistically significant. Press Ganey recognizes that change was not random, but due to some change within your facility. Your patients have recognized this change!"

The BrightSpeed Series by General Electric benefits both practitioners and patients. BrightSpeed maintains the optimal speed, power and resolution needed to aid in non-invasive diagnoses from colon cancer to cardiovascular disease.

Radiology Director Stacy Clarken commented on the new CT scanner. "The new BrightSpeed Elite Enhanced CT Scanner offers a balanced design enabling it to deliver four very important things all at once that being enhanced clinical performance, excellent image quality, broadened coverage, and maximum exam speed".

 Did you know that this year 13,000 young men and women were diagnosed with colon cancer? 

These are all questions we should be aware of.  March is National Colon Cancer Awareness Month.  The surgery department here at HCMH has put together a public campaign to encourage everyone to have a screening colonoscopy.  You will notice posters, pins, shirts, radio and newspaper ads encouraging everyone to be aware of the simplicity of screening for colon cancer.  Don't be a statistic...call for yours today! 515-332-4200 ext. 169

                                                                        On January 25, 2011, the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital Laboratory was subject to a bi-annual inspection under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment "CLIA". CLIA is a Federal law that sets standards for all laboratories that do testing on human specimens. HCMH laboratory is categorized as a "High Complexity Lab", the highest category of laboratory with the highest standards. The survey was very comprehensive; some of the area's looked at where: personnel qualification, continuing education, verification of testing personnel competence, instrument maintenance, calibration of instruments, quality control, proficiency testing, quality of tests results and test turnaround time.

HCMH laboratory passed the inspection with no deficiencies and no recommendations.   Laboratory Director Phil Rose stated, "I'm very lucky to have employees that are so committed to maintaining high standards . The inspection result is truly a reflection of the hard work and dedication of the laboratory staff"

A statewide survey by the Iowa Hospital Association (IHA) shows Iowa hospitals provided community benefits in 2009 valued at more than $1.2 billion.

Community benefits are activities designed to improve health status and provide greater access to health care.  Along with uncompensated care (which is made up of both charity care and bad debt), community benefits include such services and programs as health screenings, support groups, counseling, immunizations, nutritional services and transportation programs.  The total value of these services, as reported in the survey, was nearly $147 million. 

All 118 of Iowa’s community hospitals participated in the survey.

The programs and services accounted for in the survey were implemented in direct response to the needs of individual communities as well as entire counties and regions.  Many of these programs and services simply would not exist without hospital support and leadership, said IHA President Kirk Norris.

But the ability of Iowa hospitals to respond to such needs is being hindered by the ongoing economic downturn as well as by huge losses inflicted upon hospitals by Medicare and Medicaid.

Total uncompensated care in 2009, including charity care and bad debt, was valued at more than $796.4 million, an increase of $85.9 million (15.8 percent) over 2008.

Meanwhile, Medicare and Medicaid, which represent about 60 percent of all hospital revenue in Iowa, created approximately $310 million in losses for the state’s hospitals during 2009.

Federal health care reform legislation passed earlier this year moved Medicare several steps toward a payment system that recognizes and rewards high-quality, low-cost providers like Iowa hospitals.  Studies have shown that as much as 30 percent of health care is wasted by either being duplicative or ineffective and that some states, including Iowa, do a much better job of providing efficient care.  Reducing that waste would save billions of dollars, which could be directed toward providing coverage for the uninsured.

“Mechanisms are now in place to better ensure fair treatment from Medicare for high-value health care providers like Iowa hospitals,” Norris said.  “We are also buoyed by the appointment of Donald Berwick to administer the Medicare and Medicaid programs.  Dr. Berwick has an unparalleled reputation for leading and inspiring changes that increase health care value.”

The Iowa Hospital Association is a voluntary membership organization representing hospital and health system interests to business, government and consumer audiences.  All 118 community hospitals in Iowa, with more than 74,000 employees and a $6.1 billion impact on the state’s economy, are IHA members.

The Humboldt Co Mem Hospital Ambulance service purchased a new vehicle which was put into service in May 2010.

The service is looking forward to a new ambulance due for delivery this spring.   The EMS crew responses to approximately 600 calls for assistance each year with 2 ambulances being staffed 24/7.
